Abstract

This case study focuses on an initiative by the Association of Local Authorities of Greater Thessaloniki (ALAGT) aimed at reducing landfill dependency and promoting sustainable disposal practices. ALAGT, established as a public environmental agency in 1971, oversees waste management across the Thessaloniki region, a highly populated and industrial area in Central Macedonia. To address tire waste, ALAGT launched a pilot collection program targeting local tire retailers and retreading companies. By offering free disposal and redirecting tires for energy recovery, primarily in cement kilns, ALAGT provided an economically viable alternative to landfill disposal. The pilot not only reduced environmental hazards but also encouraged an environmentally responsible approach to tire end-of-life management, offering a potential model for other regions facing similar challenges.
