Buna-N
Buna-N
Buna-N, also known as Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR), is a synthetic rubber widely used for its excellent oil, fuel, and chemical resistance. It is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, with its properties varying based on the acrylonitrile content.
Key Properties of Buna-N
Oil & Fuel Resistance – Highly resistant to petroleum-based oils, fuels, and greases.
Good Mechanical Strength – Offers excellent tensile strength and abrasion resistance.
Temperature Resistance – Performs well between -40°C to 120°C, with specialty grades tolerating higher temperatures.
Water & Chemical Resistance – Resistant to water, alcohols, and mild acids, but less effective against ozone and UV exposure.
Customizable Hardness – Available in different durometer (Shore A) ratings, making it adaptable for various applications.
Limitations of Buna-N
Poor Ozone & UV Resistance – Can degrade if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.
Limited Heat Resistance – Not ideal for high-temperature applications above 120°C (Viton® or silicone may be better).
Less Flexibility at Low Temperatures – Can become brittle in extreme cold, though special formulations improve this.
Common Applications of Buna-N
O-Rings & Seals – Used in automotive, aerospace, and industrial applications.
Gaskets & Hoses – Ideal for fuel, oil, and hydraulic systems.
Rubber Rollers & Conveyor Belts – Found in industrial machinery.
Gloves & Protective Equipment – Resistant to oils and chemicals in safety gear.
Buna-N is one of the most widely used rubber materials in automotive, aerospace, oil & gas, and industrial applications due to its excellent fuel and oil resistance.
