Laundry machines last about 10-20 years before they get replaced. Several organizations work hard on the recovery of materials from these machines, such as metals, plastics and electric motors. The rubber parts however are seen as a waste stream, and companies pay for disposal.

We estimate the total stream between 200-400 tonnes for The Netherlands, which is currently incinerated.

Circular Rubber Platform identified an opportunity for research, with multiple interesting stakeholders in it's network. Within just months, a small consortium was created:

  • Collection and sorting station for White Goods

  • EPR organization for white goods

  • Rubber identification research group

  • Laboratory

The first stage comprises of sample testing door seals from brands and models, to understand available rubber and TPE types. Based on that, a adequate sorting system will be developed, to sort into valuable streams. When the size of the streams are defined, recycling pathways will be explored.

The project already received interest from German, Italian and UK partners.
