Abstract
This document is a report on the work carried out under Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) bid solicitation 500 004 7787, Exploring Circular Economy for Rubber in Canada, completed in April 2021. The study has been carried out, on behalf of ECCC, to develop a profile of the Canadian rubber industry and market, and to explore the flow of materials and products through the value chain, from feedstock to end of life (EoL) treatment. Findings of this study will help inform the development of a national strategy through identification of opportunities and barriers to transitioning to a circular economy (CE) for rubber in Canada. This strategy might involve a mix of measures, such as regulatory or market interventions, from the technology employed through sustainable product supply chains to the circular ‘loops’ which can regenerate products, to reduction of barriers and identification of opportunities for further research that have a high potential for enhancing the circular economy of rubber. This initiative is part of ECCC’s ongoing work to support a circular economy approach for the management of products and waste, and to implement the comprehensive federal agenda on waste reduction.
